Die ersten Fotografien – oder die Werke, die wir gelernt haben, die ersten Fotografien zu nennen – zeigten alltägliche Gegenstände: ein vergittertes Fenster, einen Heustapel, eine an die Wand gelehnte Leiter. Heute haben wir gelernt, Fotografien als unbewegliche Objekte zu sehen: die endgültige Erscheinung der Sache oder die unbewegliche Erscheinung einer Sache in Bewegung – und sei es etwas so Schnelles wie der Flügelschlag eines Kolibris.
Talbot wollte das Licht „wie die Feder der Natur“ einsetzen, um ein erträglicheres Bild zu schaffen. Doch seine Aufnahmen wirken nun sehr flüchtig. In der Zeit schwebend, scheinen sie nicht irgendwo anzukommen. Erscheinen sie auf dem Papier oder verschwinden sie wieder? Diese Serie aus Fotogrammen erforscht diese Dynamik.

The first photographs – or the works, that we have learned to call the first photographs – showed everyday objects: a latticed window, a stack of hay, a ladder leaning at a wall. Nowadays we have learned to see photographs as fixed objects: the final appearance of the thing or the fixed appearance of a thing in motion – and be it something fast as the beating of a hummingbird’s wing.
Talbot wanted to use light “as the pen of nature” to create a more endurable picture. But his exposures now look very transient. Suspended in time they do not seem to arrive somewhere. Are they appearing on the paper or are they disappearing?
This photographic series explores this dynamic. Subjects are windows in the city, letters like windows to a heart, doors as entrances or exits, windows as reflections – windows in windows: the way cities stack spaces and leave gaps for windows.
